EN 8 material, also known as 1040 carbon steel, is a medium-carbon engineering steel offering a balanced combination of strength, machinability, and moderate wear resistance. EN 8 steel is widely used for shafts, pins, and general mechanical components.

Key Features

EN 8 steel provides medium tensile strength with good machinability in the as-supplied condition. AISI 1040 carbon steel supports surface hardening through flame or induction methods to improve wear resistance without additional alloying.

Typical Applications
  • Shafts, axles and spindles
  • Pins, studs and machine components
  • Gears and gear blanks
  • Connecting rods and crankshafts
  • General engineering and mechanical parts
Forms of Supply

Supplied as hot-rolled or normalized round bars, flats, and blocks. As established steel manufacturers in UAE supplying ferrous metals to Oman and Saudi Arabia, we offer standard and custom lengths across the Gulf region.

EN 8 material, also known as 1040 carbon steel, is a medium-carbon engineering steel valued for its strength, machinability, and moderate wear resistance. EN 8 steel is commonly used in general engineering applications where reliable mechanical performance is required.

As established steel manufacturers in UAE supplying ferrous metals across Oman and Saudi Arabia, we provide EN 8 material in standard and custom sizes. The consistent quality of AISI 1040 carbon steel makes it suitable for shafts, pins, gears, and mechanical components.

Key Advantages of EN 8 Steel
  • Medium-carbon steel with good strength and toughness
  • Excellent machinability in as-supplied condition
  • Suitable for flame or induction surface hardening
  • Ideal for shafts, pins, gears, and engineering parts
  • Supplied by reliable steel manufacturers in UAE and the Gulf region

Technical Specifications

Chemical Composition
  • Carbon (C): 0.36–0.44% – Provides the medium-carbon base strength and hardenability.
  • Manganese (Mn): 0.60–1.00% – Improves strength and toughness.
  • Silicon (Si): 0.10–0.40% – Adds strength and supports machinability.
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.05% – Limits brittleness.
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.05% – Ensures sufficient machinability.
Mechanical Properties
  • Tensile Strength: Approx. 550–700 MPa in standard condition.
  • Yield Strength: Approx. 300–450 MPa in standard condition.
  • Elongation: Typically ≥14% in standard condition.
  • Hardness (HB): Around 170-210 HB in annealed/normalized condition.
  • Surface Hardening Capability: Suited for flame or induction hardening to achieve higher surface hardness levels.
