1.2379 Tool Steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel offering exceptional wear resistance, dimensional stability and hardenability, ideal for long-run tooling applications.

Key Features

This grade delivers very high abrasive-wear resistance and excellent shape stability during hardening, making it a top choice for medium to heavy duty cold-work tooling where wear life and precision matter.

Typical Applications
  • Blanking, forming and trim dies
  • Slitting cutters and shear blades
  • Thread-rolling dies and extrusion tooling
  • Machine knives and wear parts
  • Tools for cold-work and high-abrasion operations
Forms of Supply

Supplied in annealed condition (≤ ~255 HB) as round bars, flats, squares and blocks, with options for machining or hardening to suit your tooling requirements—available for delivery across the UAE & Gulf region.

Technical Specifications

Chemical Composition
  • Carbon (C): 1.45-1.60% – High carbon content provides strong carbide network for wear resistance.
  • Chromium (Cr): 11.00-13.00% – High chromium ensures hardenability, wear resistance and dimensional stability.
  • Molybdenum (Mo): 0.70-1.20% – Adds toughness and elevated temperature strength.
  • Vanadium (V): 0.70-1.10% – Refines grain structure and boosts wear resistance.
  • Manganese (Mn): 0.20-0.60% – Supports toughness and alloying effectiveness.
  • Silicon (Si): 0.10-0.60% – Provides deoxidation and adds strength.
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.03% – Keeps brittleness low.
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.03% – Maintains steel quality and machinability.
Treatment
  • Soft-Annealing: Heat to approx. 820-870°C, hold as per section, then furnace-cool to ~600°C, followed by air cooling to achieve ≤ ~255 HB for machining readiness.
  • Hardening: Austenitise at ~1000-1040°C, then air, oil or vacuum quench depending on section size; achieves hardness ~60-62 HRC.
  • Tempering: Repeated tempering cycles between ~150-550°C to balance hardness and toughness; final hardness range ~55-62 HRC depending on variant.
  • Finishing & Coating: Excellent for nitriding, PVD/CVD coatings or mirror surface polishing thanks to high-alloy structure and wear resistance.
